Science Highlights

Rob Hetland:
Issues with server.....and Patchen's ngom runs  ... fixed!!  Files on the server would change, and the server would go up/down.  TAMU's computer failures haven't effected this project.  Some scientific issues: 2 sets of ncom results (daily values...averages?) and one has 6-hourly values.  Nudging is happening with an 8-hour timescale......is this reasonable?  Would like boundaries to be a little flexible so that the models are "blended" at the boundaries.  Decided to stick with either 6 or 8 hours......times scales of variaibility is long enough that this should not be an issue.   Sending files to Katja in another month or so.  Big signal is the inertial oscillations (near diurnal); but tides are small.  Models do not have tides.  Inertial signal is forced by the land-sea breeze.  Esp for the oil spill stuff, the 3-day inertial oscillation is the big thing.  Will inertial oscillations for the nesting model be out of phase.  Must look at winds......see how much an effect using different winds.  Point winds hourly output, vs 3-hourly winds, vs parent model winds 3-6 hourly winds.  Can do smaller runs with point winds and parent model winds.  Patchen will be looking at 2008......Rob should look at this year too.  If the timing works out, maybe Patchen can explore some of these issues without holding Rob up.  Katja already has the uncoupled runs.  HYCOM runs.....need to re-run some simulations.  HYCOM runs next....get them to Katja.  Rob will know if the runs look reasonable before the entire time frame has been run.  Each run (of the entire time frame) takes 3-4 days.  Rob does first level QA before sending model runs to Katja.  So if NGOM is next run....w/ QA....probably in a week or two.

Katja -- waiting for TAMU model runs.  Wrapping up the data compilation; working on documentation and data overview plots.  Needs bottom depths for the location of the profiles provided by Jerry.  Some of the profiles do not go all the way to the bottom.  Jerry can get nutrient data to Katja...would be helpful.  John -- seamap data....summer only ??  When will the big data set be ready to hand over to Eoin?  Could be a week or two.....  NODC also wants these data; so Katja wants the data set to be very well-documented.  Within the month easily....
Any other science issues with the uncoupled model.....??

Jerry.....
Pat released a combined SURA/Oil Spill report.  First part...wind from coamps to ncom model with some basic statistics; second part shows results from particle tracking (june 20-july 20).  NCOM simulations shows that this is a fringe effect of a hurricane.....small surge event.  About a week later, a non-tropical system also pushed water levels up.  Models produced mini-surge event quite well.  NCOMs water levels were lower in magnitude than observations.  Will post to sura website.  Jerry will help with this......
When there is a discrepancy between the model and the HF observations....which do you  believe ..... model or radar?   These data are very close to the shoreline.  John Wilkin would be a good source of information.  If there were drifters that went through the hf radar field...that would be very useful.
Met with Bruce L. -- beneficial discussions about model/obs comparisons.
Rich P suggested looking at tides within AMSEAS.  Implementing IMEDS....

John described an effort underway now -- Using the models to help guide sampling strategies for a fisheries applications in the Caribbean.

No Matt Howard.....Cyberinfrastructure team is meeting today at 1PM -- any issues to bring up to them?  Server issues.....is would go down; was slow; could not find the data.  Issues have been resolved now.  He is accessing individual files, not the aggregate.  Document problems in as much detail as possible.  Useful to test the tools.......Rich S will contact Martinho......

John will draft monthly report and send out for comment.
